Weekly Update for Sep 12th - 16th
Curefest Sunday September 18th: Please see attached notice. <CUREFEST CANADA DRAFT.docx> Grade 7 Terry Fox Run: October 3rd in the afternoon. Donations can be made at http://www.terryfox.ca/ConnectCharter. Community Helpers: Our Community Helpers Program begins tomorrow. Ask your child about the first lesson. Humanities: This week we are beginning to explore determining historical significance. We will be looking at the four guideposts of historical significance using both student and teacher generated examples. Be sure to ask your child this topic as it may lead to some interesting discussions. We will also continue our focus on fundamentals of language. Math/Science: A letter was sent home on Friday regarding FreshGrades. If your child didn’t provide the letter, (a few were in the recycling box) please review the attached file. This will be an important assessment tool we are using this year in M/Sc and you will be receiving an email this week inviting you to view your child’s portfolio. Our focus this week in Science will be on the very early stages of planning for and designing a bridge as part of the SW leg of the Calgary Ring-Road. After acquiring some background information on the ring-road we will begin to learn about different bridge types, along with internal and external forces acting on bridges. In Math, students will be given a variety of probability problems to follow up on the Monty Hall problem provided last week. In Grade 7, we will explore multiple events such as the odds of getting a heads from a 2-sided coin and rolling a 6 on a die simultaneously.

Hello parents, here’s what we are up to this week.
First of all, a huge thank you goes out to our wonderful parent volunteers who did a fantastic job cooking and supporting our students while we were at camp. Please watch these weekly updates for other opportunities to volunteer on day trips, PE field trips and of course our trip to Fort Steele in May. We will do our best to provide as much notice as possible about volunteer opportunities. Remember, to volunteer in any capacity you must have a security clearance on file with the school. Math/Science: We will begin our work with Structures and Forces this week with a few activities designed to introduce some of the vocabulary and background knowledge prior to rolling out a more in-depth and hands on investigation in the coming weeks. If you are interested in the specific outcomes covered in this or any other unit this year, please visit our classroom website. http://7374website.weebly.com In Math, we will spend some time exploring a well known probability problem called the Monty Hall Problem. *** Volunteer/Expert Request: If you are an engineer and have a good understanding of bridges, we are planning a field trip to examine some of Calgary’s bridges and we would very interested in speaking to you/having you accompany us on the trip. Please email if you are interested in sharing your expertise. Humanities: On Thursday this week we will have a short check-in on the 8 parts of speech as well as general sentence construction and conversation punctuation. We will also be starting to explore the six major historical thinking skills that we will be using throughout the year. More information on that can be found here (http://historicalthinking.ca/historical-thinking-concepts). Health: We have attached information about the Community Helpers Program that we will be starting in the next few weeks. A paper copy will be sent home with students on Monday. |
